Description |
A ceremonial Chinese sword made of coins, broken in places, and loose coins. Eight loose coins, probably loosed by breakage in the square iron rod which goes through the sword. No identifying marks, apart from the characters on the coins. |
Provenance |
Card: "SWORD Made of Chinese Money Presented By Miss Mary E. Fauntleroy. Given to her by I.B. Mayer, a former teacher [former principal according to the 1922 Jester yearbook] in the New Harmony Public school." |
Notes |
Research tells that this is I. B. Mayers, who was a principal and teacher in New Harmony High School. He arrived during school year 1915-1916 and taught in school year 1916-1917. In spring 1917, "one week before school closed Mr. Mayers answered the call of his country." In other words, he enlisted to fight in World War I. This appears to be Isaac Brown Mayers, from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The date range was set based on his time in New Harmony, ending with its donation date (I. B. lived until 1953 so his death date doesn't set the end date of the range), in case he acquired it after leaving New Harmony. |
