Description |
Wooden spoon. Deep narrow bowl. Handle is wide at the end but has a narrow section before connecting to the bowl. No identifying marks. Osage orange (hedge apple, horse apple, Maclura pomifera) wood. |

"Wooden spoon, made [carved] from the last of the Rappite Orchard ... A Horse Apple Tree in the Front Yard At Adam Lichtenberger's. Made by Arthur Dransfield and Presented by Mrs. Mary Lichtenberger Ford." "Located in the front yard of the Ford family home (1992) South Main. Presented by Mrs William Ford, Sr." "A cooking spoon, carved from the wood of the old Horse Apple tree, made by Arthur Dransfield, was presented by Mrs. William M. Ford. The tree is remembered by older citizens as standing near the front door of the Adam Lichtenberger home, the site of the old orchard." The card that was with the item reads: "A cooking spoon, carved from the wood of the Old Horse Apple tree, last of the Harmonist orchard trees. Made by: Arthur Dransfield Given by: Mrs. William M. Ford [Mary Lichtenberger]" and handwritten on the back of the card is "Harmonist orchard was located [in] what is now the front yard of the Ford Family home on South Main Street (1992)" |

Dates from some time before Mary Lichtenberger became Mary Lichtenberger Ford, Mrs. William Ford Sr. in 1871. Dates from some time after the birth date of Arthur Dransfield, which is 1848. The Maclura pomifera was named in honor of William Maclure. |
