Description |
Red clay (catlinite) pipe. Carved around edges is a triangular pattern. Hand made. Scratched on flat sides: "FRANCOIS" and "BARROY" and "NANON". There is a flat piece where there is a little hole, possibly for a thong, and on that surface is scratched "C.P.W./O.M.W." [probably Clarence Prentice Wolfe / Oliver M. Wolfe] |
Provenance |
Card: "Old French trapper's pipe found on banks of Wabash - very old - give to museum" Card slipped into the box reads, partly in marker and partly penciled: "French Trader's (Clay?) Pipe Wabash River Probably made by Indians [native American]." and "hole for leather thong very valuable made of calcite" and "catlinite". Typed card reads "Original owner - an Indian Item - Bowl of an Indian pipe probably carried by a French missionary or trader who scratched "Barroy", "Francois", "Nannette[sic]" on three sides Found in mud along the Wabash river Present owner - Ruth Wolfe: gave to Working Men's Institute, 1973" |
Notes |
Initials are probably Clarence Prentice Wolfe and Oliver M. Wolfe initials. Haven't been able to find a similar pipe bowl online. There are more decorated ones, but without any names, and none with a hole for a cord of some kind. The end date is the date of donation, though we know that it is much older than that. |
