Description |
Scale of human faculties. 21 brass strips, 10 of them marked with engraved names, such as "memory" or "courage", followed by graduated lines, from 0 to 100. "Scale of Human [illegible]" is engraved on the vertical bar at the left, which the brass strips are attached to. The brass was melted and damaged in a fairly large part of the scale. |

"An invention of Robert Owen & used in his lectures was a "scale of human faculties & qualities of birth". It had ten scales: Self attachment, affections, judgement, imagination, reflection, perception, excitability, courage, strength, memory. Each slide is divided into 100 parts from 1 to 10. A slide that can be moved shows the measure of the qualities each one possesses, or believes himself to possess. The remains may be seen in the museum, partly warped by fire. (See Jas. Stuart. As quoted from the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, who saw it in his visits with Owen:"..each child can be shown his capabilities...It has ten scales with the following titles: self-attachment, affections, judgment, imagination, memory, reflection, perception, excitability, courage, strength. Each scale is divided into one hundred parts...A slide that can be moved up and down shows the measure of the qualities therein specified each one possesses, or believes himself to possess."" |
