Notes |
The letter reads "Muscogee, Ind. Ter., Jan 3rd, 1897. Dear Hal [H. L. Wilmoth 1848-1911], Send you same mail as this, a part of the loop of the rope that was used in hanging Cherokee Bill. Mean by the loop the part that went around his neck. This will be a good companion for Will's [William Wilmoth, H. L. Wilmoth's brother? 1854-1909] Winchester. Nan [Nancy Boren, nee Fretageot 1862-1938] desires me to thank you for the wine, and think she is giving it particular attention. Regards to all the people. Hope your mother is still all right. Will always remember she kept me from starving last Sunday. Yours, W.S. Boren. [William Sampson Boren 1858-1921]" Crawford Goldsby had the nickname "Cherokee Bill." |
