Description |
Studio piano which belonged to Frances Wright [according to the old display card; this is not true]. There is a hinge across the width of the piano in the middle of the top. There are handles built onto each side halfway up. There are three panels in the front, the middle is oval. Those on each side contain decorated knobs which have openings in them, though it's not clear for what. The top opens to reveal, among other things, a piece that hinges out toward the front, and when it's drawn to the front, a holder for sheet music folds down in front for the player. |
Provenance |
Card on the front reads "ITALIAN PIANO/This piano was made by G[iuseppe] Mola in Torino (Turin) Italy/Presented by her grandson Kenneth Guthrie" The index cards listing d'Arusmont relics mention "Piano of Frances Wright" Another index card listing musical instruments mentions "An upright piano belonging to Frances Wright. Donor: Kenneth Guthrie" |
Notes |
The firm of Giuseppe Mola, a Turin piano and harmonium maker, began in 1862. Frances Wright died December 13, 1852, in Cincinnati, Ohio. So this piano probably belonged to Frances Sylva Camilla d'Arusmont, Frances Wright's daughter. |
