Description |
Engraved sterling silver cheese server. Engraved patterns on top. Hallmark on bottom: stamped with a lion passant (standard or assay mark: Sterling .925), a crowned head (mark of origin - town mark: crown leopard's head means London before 1822), 'D' (identifies the year - London 1799) , a silhouette of a bust in profile (signifies payment of the duty - looks like King George III 1786-1821), 'J', a dot, and 'E' in script letters (identifies the maker; his initials were J.E. - John Emes, London, maker's mark J.E registered 1807). There is what looks like a repair on the handle, engraved (mostly unreadable, even under a microscope; only "E" is really discernable), and also stamped with a hallmark, "JG" inside an oval, and "2" below that. |
Provenance |
On index card: "Belonged to the Maclure Family. Bought by Richard Ford, at the sale of William Maclure's household effects. Bought before 1826." On display card that was with it: "CHEESE SERVER This cheese server belonged to the Maclure Family. It was purchased by Richard Ford at the sale of William Maclure's personal household effects.
